After we'd taken in the crisp morning air up at Tuolumne, we started making our way back towards the valley over the Tioga pass and decided to take a "quick" pit stop at Olmstead point, a lookout along the pass.
We'd seen it on our way to Tuolumne, but decided to give it a go on the return trip. We were handsomely rewarded for our wait. The view as you go by on the way to the meadow did not give away sufficiently the magnificence of the panorama as it did on the way back - good call!
When you first arrive, it merely appears to be another "view point" along the pass, but when you get out of the car and start wandering around you quickly discover there are trails and hidden vistas that are beyond compare!!
Needless to say there were a number of photographers of a seemingly much higher caliber than me there, but I was undeterred in my quest for capturing the breathtaking spectacle and feel that some of the shots that follow are some of my best work to date...
This is to the right of the parking area. It is a little steep, but I climbed it anyway and planted my tripod on the rock and just started shooting, repositioning and shooting some more.
I really loved not only the simplicity of this composition, but that this immense boulder was smack on top of the ginormous rock that I was standing on - how in the heck did it get here without rolling right off?!
Half Dome framed between the rocks on top of the hill I was on.
Another view of Half Dome.
This is the northeastern side of Half Dome looking towards the Southwest.
The expanse of granite that comprises the entire area of Yosemite.
Nature is awesome in its simplicity!!
From the parking area it was a nice little walk, through rocks, pine and still melting snow to get to the actual Olmstead Point lookout.
This was a ginat pine tree growing in between the rocks on this mountain called Olmstead Point. This is looking in the northeastern direction toward Tenaya Lake which, if you kept hiking in this direction, you would reach.
First it is amazing that at this altitude stuff can still grow this big, but even more amazing that it can grow in little more than a crevice in a huge rock!
Two little love birds sitting on a rock...
